Graduation Gift? Mac VS. PC

Every year about this time I get the same question over and over again, “my son and daughter has just received a sum of money from their graduation open house and we’re thinking of buying a new laptop computer to send our pride and joy off to college with”. So instead of answering this question over and over and I thought I’d just create a post. This is how I see it (please remember I have never owned a Mac):


  • Number one: I think Macs are better than PCs.
  • Number two: I think PCs are a better value dollar for dollar. A Mac will cost 2 to 2.5 times the cost of the same specification PC.
  • Number three: The less you know about computers, the better idea it is to buy a Mac. 
  • Number four: If you buy a PC you had better have a backup plan, you will get viruses, and you will need to restore your computer to its original factory settings sometime in the next 18 months. That is not a big deal, if you know what to do (that will be the topic of our next blog post). 
  • Number five: Macs are cool PCs are not. 
  • Number six: I will never own a Mac, unless it costs about the same as a PC. I will never be cool. 

I would love feedback from my Mac friends and militant PC supporters. Let’s get this party started!

    Get a pc and put linux on it cheaper hardware and virtually no viruses :)

    The fundemental reasons Mac work better is because Apple makes the hardware and most of the software itself. Sure it uses components from other companies, but it militantly quality checks hardware and software. It is way easier to control quality when you control all the variables. Microsoft makes the OS for PCs. Microsoft is a software company. Who knows how many hardware and software configurations are in any given PC - and how many different companies provide the hardware and software. There is no practical way for Microsoft to proactively quality check PCs. So they are left to react. They spend 5+ years creating Vista, of course it was a disaster because they couldn't account for all the configurations of hardware that it was going to be installed on, couldn't predict all the third party software that it would need to be compatible with, and then had to react to all these problems. Windows 7 is the improvement to that situation, but under this paradigm, there is no way for Microsoft to prevent this in the future. When you control the hardware, OS, and software, you can create a quality product. When you don't, you are left vulnerable to some virus that gets in through some third party software that runs in the background of some video card installed in some renegade PC...impossible situation. Patches. Updates. Headaches. Plus Apple is super persnickety about everything. That helps too.
